Tradicija, na katero se lahko sklicuje Zgodovinski časopis sega vse do Mitteilungen des Historischen Vereins für Krain, ki so začele izhajati 1846. Neposredni predhodnik Zgodovinskega časopisa pa je bil Glasnik Muzejskega društva za Slovenijo (1919-1945), ki se je ob preoblikovanju Muzejskega društva za Slovenijo leta 1946 v Zgodovinsko društvo za Slovenijo tudi sam preoblikoval v Zgodovinski časopis.
