In the beginning the library activity for the newly established faculty was imple­mented by the University Library of Maribor (UML), later the faculty has established its own central library MF UM. The purpose of this research is primarily to determine the formation, the role, the meaning and evaluation of the newly introduced special library collections at the UML and the MF UM library such as A collection of models of the organs and bones of the human body. The two collections were formed due to the needs of the study process in the field of medicine at the University of Maribor. We pre­sent and analyse the usage of collections in a specific period, with indicators “library collection turnover rate” and “loan to a potential user”, to enable overwiew of usage of the Dr. Zora Janžekovič Room in the UML and the loan of A collection of models of the organs and bones of the human body at the MF UM. With acquired results we wish to confirm the usability of both collections, the justification of investment in manage­ment and the need for their further formation.Methodology/approach: For the evaluation of usefulness of library collections we col­lected statistical data on the usage of A collection of models of the organs and bones of the human body in the UML and in the MF UM library through various periods. Data on the usage of the collection in the UML was collected on the basis of annual reports on the work of the UML for the years 2004 to 2006, documentation Records of usage f anatomy study room between the years 2006 and 2011 and from data collection of software C3 –Loan where the usage of inventory and chairs has been recorded in the Dr. Zora Janžekovič Room since 2018 onwards. We also gathered the data on loan of the collection at the MF UM library from reccords of C3–Loan module, since already from the establishment of the mentioned collection the loan of models has been recorded in this way. We calculated two indicators: Library collection turnover rate and Loan of a potential user, with which we facilitated the comparability of results.Results: We found out that both collections reach high values of use or loan, which justifies purchase, processing and further development, and that collections have no essential fluctuations in usage. We also found out that in temporal distribution of us­ers or loan of the collection two peaks stand out: the first in spring and the second in autumn months. Research limitation: Limitation of our research is a fact that both libraries collect differ­ent data for the usage of special collections.Originality/practical implications: We wanted to examine the justification of the estab­lishment of both library collections of anatomical models which were introduced on the basis of medical study needs. With the obtained results we wish to complete and improve library services in the future. Thus we conducted the first research which deals with the justification, usability and historical development of special collections in SloveniaNamen: Ustanovitev Medicinske fakultete Univerze v Mariboru (MF UM) je vplivala na spremembe v knjižnični dejavnosti na tej univerzi. Na začetku je knjižnično dejavnost novoustanovljene fakultete izvajala Univerzitetna knjižnica Maribor (UKM), kasneje pa je fakulteta vzpostavila lastno matično knjižnico. Pojasniti želimo nastajanje, vlogo, pomen in vrednotenje vpeljanih novih posebnih knjižničnih zbirk v UKM in knjižni­ci MF UM, na primeru Zbirke modelov organov in kosti človeškega telesa. Zbirki smo zgradili zaradi potreb študijskega procesa medicine na Univerzi v Mariboru. Predstav­ljamo in analiziramo uporabo zbirk v določenem obdobju, in sicer s kazalcema obrat knjižnične zbirke in izposoja na potencialnega uporabnika, pregledom časovne uporabe sobe dr. Zore Janžekovič v UKM in evidenco izposoje Zbirke modelov organov človeške­ga telesa in kosti na MF UM. Z dobljenimi rezultati želimo potrditi uporabnost obeh zbirk, upravičenost vlaganja v upravljanje in potrebo po njuni nadaljnji izgradnji.Metodologija/pristop: Za oceno uporabnosti knjižničnih zbirk smo zbrali statistične po­datke o uporabi Zbirke modelov organov in kosti človeškega telesa v UKM in v knjižnici MF UM v različnih obdobjih. Podatke o uporabi zbirke v UKM smo zbrali na podlagi etnih poročil o delu UKM za obdobje od leta 2004 do 2006, dokumentacije Evidenca uporabe študijske sobe za anatomijo med leti 2006 in 2011 ter iz zbirke podatkov pro­gramske opreme Cobiss3 – Izposoja, kjer se beleži uporaba inventarja in stolov v sobi dr. Zore Janžekovič od leta 2018 dalje. Prav tako smo podatke o izposoji zbirke v knjiž­nici MF UM pridobili iz izpisov Cobiss3 – Izposoja; od vzpostavitve zbirke se izposoja modelov beleži na ta način. Izračunali smo vrednosti dveh kazalcev, obrata knjižnične zbirke in izposoje na potencialnega uporabnika, s katerima smo omogočili primerljivost rezultatov.Rezultati: Ugotovili smo, da obe zbirki dosegata visoke vrednosti uporabe oz. izposoje, kar potrjuje upravičenost nabave, obdelave in nadaljnjega razvoja, ter da zbirki nimata bistvenih razlik v uporabi. Prav tako smo ugotovili, da v časovni porazdelitvi uporab­nikov oz. izposoje izstopata dva vrha: prvi v pomladnih in drugi v jesenskih mesecih. Omejitve raziskave: Raziskavo omejuje neenotno zbiranje podatkov, saj knjižnici zbira­ta različne podatke o uporabi posebnih zbirk. Izvirnost/uporabnost raziskave: Predstavljamo argumente za upravičenost vzpostavitve obeh knjižničnih zbirk anatomskih modelov, ki smo ju vpeljali na podlagi potreb štu­dija medicine. Z dobljenimi rezultati želimo dopolniti in izboljšati knjižnične storitve v prihodnosti.
