It was established in 1919. With the support of conscientious Maribor inhabitants, the Musical centre between the two Wars promoted Slovene music in the city. Under the guidance of musicians and composers the first mixed choir of the Maribor Music Centre was among the best Slovene choirs. At the invitation of the Music Centre, Czech, Bulgarian, Serb and Swiss choirs came to Maribor. S pomočjo zavednih Mariborčanov, ne glede na njihovo strankarsko pripadnost, je Glasbena matica v obdobju med obema vojnama razvijala slovensko glasbo v mestu. Predstavljala se je s koncertnimi programi, pevskimi turnejami po domovini in tujini. Pod vodstvom glasbenikov in skladateljev (Oskar Dev, Vasilij Mirk, Ubald Vrabec, Karol Pahor in Marjan Kozina) je bil mešani pevski zbor matice med najboljšimi slovenskimi zbori. Na povabilo Glasbene matice so prihajali v Maribor češki, bolgarski, srbski in švicarski zbori.
