However, after the initial enthusiasm the idea quickly faded in the West with the discovery of antibiotics, accompanied by lack of phage biology understanding and insufficient proof of therapeutic efficacy of bacteriophage medicines due to inappropriately designed clinical trials. Today, as we are faced with accelerating emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, the idea of bacteriophage-based drugs was brought back to life.
