They were critically scrutinised only by a handful of intellectuals, and even these disagreed on their merit. The advocates of games and athletics argued that they were useful as military training. Critics, on the other hand, stressed two objections from the first: good athletes did not automatically make good soldiers (the two occupations were sometimes even seen as mutually exclusive), and to exalt athletes was to misjudge the true essence of man. The paper gives a chronological survey of the favourable and unfavourable schools of thought, from the earliest Greek texts to the period of the Roman EmpireOlimpijske in druge igre grškega tipa so v antiki vse do prevlade krščanstva uživale splošno priljubljenost. Kritično jih je pretresal le ozek krog intelektualcev, a tudi njihova mnenja so bila deljena. Zagovor iger in atletike je temeljil predvsem na misli, da so koristne kot priprava na vojaški spopad. Kritika pa je že od vsega začetka izpostavljala zlasti dva pomisleka. Prvi je, da dobri športniki v resnici niso samodejno tudi dobri vojaki ali da se to dvoje celo izključuje, drugi pa, da preveličevanje športnikov temelji na napačni oceni, kaj je v človeku resnično človeškega.
