Since the Renaissance private libraries have often formed, in Slovenia as well as elsewhere in Europe, basic collections of university and national libraries. Since the second half of the nineteenth century more and more Slovenian intellectuals have collected large personal libraries. Personal library of the general Rudolf Maister, collected at the turn of the century, is a bibliophile library. Rudolf Maister collected all publications, published in Slovenian language and by Slovenian authors. His library therefore presents him as a Slovenian patriot and at the same time reflects the Slovenian national tendencies of the period. Many of Maister's contemporaries collected large personal libraries but only few of these collections are preserved, listed and protected"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Poročilom o osebnih knjižnicah filozofov, znanstvenikov, literarnih ustvarjalcev in bibliofilov se da slediti od časov antične Grčije vse do današnjih dni. Osebne knjižnice so tudi na Slovenskem, podobno kot v drugih deželah Evrope, pogosto predstavljale temeljne fonde javnih knjižnic, pokrajinskih, visokošolskih in nacionalnih. Število osebnih knjižnic slovenskih izobražencev je začelo naraščati od srede devetnajstega stoletja. Osebna knjižnica generala Rudolfa Maistra, ki je nastala na prelomu stoletja, je bibliofilska zbirka, zbrana na osnovi selekcijskih kriterijev, ki so vezani na slovensko nacionalno identiteto. Zbiratelj ni skušal zbrati le slovenskega slovstva, temveč je težil k temu, da bi v celoti zajel vse publikacije, ki so bile izdane v slovenščini ali so jih izdali slovenski avtorji. Knjižnična zbirka odseva slovenske nacionalne tendence tega obdobja in predstavlja Maistra kot izrazitega domoljuba.
