Nasprotno pa Thirlwallova alternativna teorija vidi omejitveni dejavnik gospodarske rasti posameznih držav v povpraševanju, do povečanja katerega ne more priti zaradi plačilnobilančnih omejitev, imponiranih z razmerjem med rastjo izvoza in dohodkovno elastičnostjo povpraševanja po uvozu.
