It is frequently a chronic disease with acute phases and periods of remission. Complex clinical picture makes it hard to diagnose, and as a consequence depression often remains untreated. Pharmacotherapy with antidepressants is the major therapeutic strategy for the management of depression. It is based on numerous hypotheses, which form a complicated scheme of depression etiology. Potek bolezni zaznamujejo epizode depresij z vmesnimi remisijami. Zaradi kompleksne klinične slike je pogosto neprepoznana in zato nezdravljena. Farmakoterapija z antidepresivi je poleg psihoterapije glavni pristop za zdravljenje depresivnih motenj. Temelji na številnih hipotezah, ki se dopolnjujejo v zapleteno sliko etiologije bolezni.
