It is not easy to speak about him in general, it isn't even fair. Why not? Because the intellectual is a personality per se. Inspite of this, this article will try to depict some of his general characteristics. An intellectual is a part of the intelligentsia par excellence, but not belonging to it as an established system's stratum. It is true, he has been developing along with society's development. However not in congruence with it, but in opposition to it, as its "critical (unhappy) conscience". Though we find some of an intellectual's characteristics earli-erin history, the modern intellectual had evolved from the bourgeois, industrial-capitalist society. The question is raising, does the so called post-industrial society need intellectuals of the previuos type? The answer is: not just the same type. Nevertheless, it will still need intellectual as its criti-cial conscience. Why? Because there will never be a society with-out cotradictions</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Intelektualec je nesporno osebnost, ki nekako ("nevidno") "vlada" družbi kot "duh dobe" (brez kakršnekoli uradne oblasti), ne da bi se sam tega zavedal ali namerno k temu težil. Govoriti o njem nasploh ni lahko, ker je intelektualec (p)osebnost zase. Pa vendar skušam v razpravi (obliki tez) zapisati nekaj splošnih ugotovitev - trditev. Te so: da je intelektualec inteligent par excellence, a noče pripadati inteligenci kot etabliranemu sloju sistema; da se je intelektualec razvijal z razvojem same družbe (svetovne in nacionalne), vendar nekako po nasprotnem polu, kot njena kritična zavest; to je, v nasprotju z njo, v protislovju, ki ga nosi tudi v sebi; zaradi česar ga imenujejo tudi "nesrečna zavest" - samega sebe in dane družbe. Čeprav zasledimo neke značilnosti intelektualca že pri osebnostih starega in srednjega veka, pa je sodobni intelektualec vendarle produkt meščanske družbe oziroma industrijskega-kapitalističnega sistema; zdaj pa vse bolj kot produkt postindustrijskega sistema (družbe). Zaradi česa se sprašujemo, ali je (bo) intelektualec še potreben oziroma ali naj bi bil precej drugačen? Avtor razprave prvo možnost zavrača, drugo pa sprejema (ker ne bo nikoli nobene družbe brez protislovij, za analizo katerih so intelektualci posebni "eksperti").
