Versatile properties enable varied uses of polymers (e.g. in adhesives, packaging and tires) as well as make the polymers potential novel materials for new applications. However, for the development of novel (and useful) polymers, a good understanding of their properties is needed. Statistical models are used for the prediction of properties and behaviour of polymer chains. The article first discusses some simpler ideal polymer chain statistical models, which are used to calculate the end-to-end distance and radius of gyration. All models in the article allow more than one monomer to occupy the same position in space. The non-covalent interactions between particles in real polymer chains are considered in excluded volume model and Flory model</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Polimeri so zelo velike molekule, sestavljene iz monomerov, ki so manjše, ponavljajoče se enote. Zaradi svojih raznolikih lastnosti imajo velik nabor možnosti uporabe (npr. v adhezivih, embalažah, pnevmatikah, …) in hkrati velik potencial za razvoj novih materialov za nove aplikacije. Za razvoj novih (uporabnih) polimerov pa je potrebno dobro poznavanje in razumevanje njihovih lastnosti. Za napovedovanje lastnosti in obnašanja polimernih verig se uporabljajo statistični modeli. Članek najprej obravnava nekaj preprostih statističnih modelov polimernih verig, iz katerih lahko izračunamo dolžino od konca do konca ter giracijski radij polimernih verig. Vsem obravnavanim modelom je skupno to, da lahko več kot en monomer zasede isto mesto v prostoru, kar v realnih verigah ni mogoče.
