Vaccination or naturally occurring illness doesnot assure lifelong immunity. Waning immunity in adolescents and adults causes the susceptibility to pertussis but the clinical picture is mild and uncharacteristic. This part of the population represents the reservoir for nonimmunised infants. There is a possibility to vaccinate adults with acellular pertussis vaccine and lower the transmission to small children. The results of the studies using acellular vaccine in adults are promising - regarding the good immune response and low rate of adverse reactions. Before making the recommendation for adult pertussis vaccination programme there are many questions to be answered. The pertussis epidemiology must be monitored intensively"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Bordetella pertussis je povzročiteljica oslovskega kašlja, bolezni, ki jo je pred uvedbo cepljenja prebolel skoraj vsak otrok. Cepljenje ali prebolela bolezen ne zagotavljata doživljenske zaščite. Imunost z leti po cepljenju upada, zato z oslovskim kašljem obolevajo mladostniki in odrasle osebe, vendarje pri njih klinična slika blaga in neznačilna. Predstavljajo pa rezervoar za majhne otroke, ki še niso zaščiteni s cepljenjem. Z acelularnim cepivom bi lahko cepili odrasle osebe in s tem zmanjšali prenos na majhne otroke. Rezultati študij so spodbudni. Cepljenje odraslih proti oslovskemu kašlju je izzvalo dober odgovor specifičnih protiteles in ni imelo resnih stranskih učinkov.
