In Slovenia, people facing infertility decide to adopt children when they lose hope of having their own. However, excessively long periods of foster care and long waiting lists (three to five years) result in a big discrepancy between the number of applications registered by the centres of social work. Although adoptions are the oldest form of social parenthood and are legally recognised, research shows thar the responses of the environment to adoptive families are diverse. The adoptive family is viewed as different from the biological one, because adoptive parents do not share the same genetic material with their children. Apart from the usual problems occurring also in the biologically constructed family, adoptive families also face the problems brought about by the specificity of adoption which allows for no predictability of what it will bring, and does not guarantie success. As adoptive families are influenced by the circumstances and the attitudes of people involved in the adoption process, it is important for the adoptive parents to keep educating themselves about the potential problems of adoption"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Avtorica opozori na problematiko posvojitev na nacionalni ravni. Neplodnost je vse večji problem današnjega časa in v Sloveniji se zakonski pari za posvojitve odločajo takrat, ko so tudi s pomočjo medicinskega zdravljenja izgubili upanje na biološkega otroka.Velik problem posvojitev v našem prostoru je dolga čakalna doba, ki traja od treh do petih let. Število otrok, ki gredo v posvojitev, je v primerjavi z vlogami, ki jih beležijo centri za socialno delo, malo. Vzrok tako maloštevilnih posvojitev je rejništvo, ki je vse preveč dolgotrajno. Čeprav so posvojitve najstarejša oblika socialnega starševstva in so tudi pravno priznane, pa rezultati raziskave kažejo, da se okolje še vedno zelo različno odziva na posvojiteljske družine. Posvojiteljska družina se zdi ljudem glede na biološko vezane družine nekaj posebnega prav zaradi tega, ker starši z otrokom ne delijo istega genskega materiala. Te družine so poleg običajnih težav, ki se pojavljajo v biološko grajeni družini, srečujejo še z drugimi, ki jih prinese specifičnost posvojitve. Kaj bo prinesla, se nikoli ne more predvidevati. Za uspešno posvojitev ni nobenega zagotovila. Okoliščine, dejavniki in raznolikost oseb, ki so vpletene v proces posvojitve, vplivajo na skladnost bodoče družine.
