Some of the most evident universal characteristics of street children pertain to gender distribution, average age, specific matrifocal structure of their original families, main reasons for leaving home and the subcultural organisation of groups on the street. Subculture constitutes one of the most important pull factors in children's decision to run away, and also provides a simulation of the child's absent family. Through the subcultural system of values, a conflict between primary and secondary habitat emerges, preventing adequate resocialisation and reintegration.
