Consequently, studies of playing characteristics most often go along the line of analysing and establishing the playing model during an attack. Nevertheless, the result-based performance at any match also depends on the playing level in defence. The latter is closely connected with the functioning of the entire team, yet even more on tactical performance of defensive players. This is determined by the positions and movements of all defenders and depends on the position of the ball and the opposing team’s forwards. For the purpose of our study we investigated the activities of defenders in a Premier League match in the 2021/22 season and defined them as Aligned, Cover1 and Cover2. The results showed large differences in the playing tactics of the defenders of the Manchester City and Liverpool teams, which can be ascribed to the differences in tactical approach or factors that can cause a change in playing tactics of defenders during a match. Based on the findings, we are convinced that it would be reasonable to continue researching with a bigger sample of matches, whereby the structure of observed and analysed variables used would be upgraded. In this case, we would be able to define with greater reliability the tactical performance of a team, and especially defenders, in the phase of transition to defence and during defence. Such findings could have a high applied valueUspešnost v nogometu je najpogosteje povezana s številom doseženih zadetkov. Zato preučevanje igralnih značilnosti največkrat temelji na analiziranju in ugotavljanju modela igre v napadu. Kljub temu je rezultatska uspešnost na tekmi odvisna tudi od ravni igre v obrambi. Ta je sicer odvisna od delovanja celotne ekipe, a največ od uspešnosti taktičnega delovanja branilcev. Določeno je s postavljanjem in gibanjem branilcev v odvisnosti od položaja žoge ter napadalcev nasprotne ekipe. Za našo raziskavo smo delovanje branilcev ugotavljali na tekmi najboljših ekip angleške elitne lige (Premier League) v sezoni 2020/21 in ga opredelili kot Poravnano, Varovanje 1 in Varovanje 2. Rezultati so pokazali precejšnje razlike v taktičnem delovanju branilcev ekip Manchester City in Liverpool, kar lahko pripisujemo razlikam v taktičnem pristopu oziroma nekaterim dejavnikom, ki lahko vplivajo na spremembe v taktičnem delovanju branilcev med tekmo. Na podlagi ugotovitev smo prepričani, da bi bilo tovrstno raziskovanje smiselno nadaljevati na večjem vzorcu tekem, pri čemer bi uporabljeno strukturo opazovanih in analiziranih spremenljivk nadgradili.
