Given the current understanding of the origins of these diseases, which include loss of function and death of brain cells, research has begun to explore the possibility of treating these diseases using the potential of stem cells, which can be differentiated in vitro into the desired cell types and could help to replace lost/damaged tissue. Different types of stem cells are thus being explored for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosisNevrodegenerativne bolezni spadajo v področje, kjer nam do sedaj še ni uspelo razviti primerne terapije, ki bi omogočala popolno ozdravitev ali pa vsaj v ustrezni meri uspela upočasniti potek bolezni. Glede na trenutno razumevanje nastanka teh bolezni, ki vključuje izgubo funkcije možganskih celic in njihovo odmiranje, se je začelo raziskovanje možnosti zdravljenja z uporabo matičnih celic, ki jih lahko in vitro diferenciramo v več različnih tipov celic in lahko pomagajo pri nadomeščanju izgubljenega/okvarjenega tkiva.
