Specialne knjižnice imajo pomembno vlogo pri pretvarjanju podatkov v informacije. Vendar opažamo, da te knjižnice še zdaleč nimajo tiste vloge, ki bi jo po vseh strokovnih kriterijih morale imeti. Večina strokovnjakov na vseh znanstvenih področjih je v času svojega aktivnega delovanja namreč odvisna prav od te vrste knjižnic.
