The author bases her observations on previously accomplished work inthis field and concisely presents the trends and the direction in which the perception of the identity of the Roma people has developed on the European level in the framework of the European integration processes. The consensus regarding equal status and partnership in international cooperation that has been achieved at the level of international organisations represents a significant challenge to the existing perceptions and favours a different approach to the question of identity of the Roma community in Slovenia. The vision of joint activity on the international level and the awareness of the political power held by the nation, whose population exceeds ten million, is anew quality in the processes of self-awareness within the Roma community in the enlarged new Europe. The activities taking place on the international scene encourage changes on the political and institutional levels of regulation in individual states of East and Central Europe. This process is reflected in passing and only in certain segments in the discussions on the situation of the Roma on the national and local levels in SloveniaPrispevek vsebuje primerjalni oris mednarodnopravnega urejanja položaja Romov v Evropi in v drugem delu na kratko povzema temeljne značilnosti položaja Romov v Sloveniji. Avtorica izhaja iz že opravljenega dela na tem področju in strnjeno predstavi tendence in smer razvoja percepcije identitete Romov na evropski ravni v procesu evropskih integracij. Že doseženi konsenz v mednarodnih organizacijah o enakopravnem statusu in partnerskem odnosu v mednarodnem sodelovanju je velik izziv za obstoječe in spodbuda za drugačno razmišljanje o identiteti romske skupnosti v Sloveniji. Vizija skupnega delovanja na mednarodni ravni in zavest o politični moči več kot deset milijonskega evropskega naroda je nova kvaliteta v procesih samozavedanj znotraj romske skupnosti v razširjeni, novi Evropi. Dogajanje na mednarodnem prizorišču spodbuja spremembe tudi na politični in institucionalni ravni urejanja v posameznih državah vzhodne in srednje Evrope.
