V primerjavi s stopnjo razvoja kmetijstva v državah članicah Evropske unije, kaže naše kmetijstvo sicer številne pomankljivosti v strukturi in produktivnosti kmetijske proizvodnje, z okoljskega vidika pa manjše snovne pritiske na posamezne sestavine okolja.
