The Latin term contemplatio is a translation of the ancient Greek word \"theoria\", meaning the method of rational observation. This article demonstrates that in Kant's Analytic of the Beautiful contemplation takes on exactly the opposite meaning. Aesthetic judgment is about judging pure pleasure, which does not originate from the conceptual definition of the object, but involves a disinterested and non-conceptual sensory contemplation of the object's form.
