The boundary separets individual grains in polycrystalline materials or the bulk of two neighbouring phases, e.g. a metal electrode and an ionic crystal or semiconductor. A special type of inter facial region is the boundary between three phases (electrode/electrolyte/gas) wich plays an important role in solidoxide fuel cells. For example, both the electrochemical reaction of oxidation of fuel and reduction of oxidant takes place at the corresponding 3-phase boundary.
