An outline is given to the so far development and characteristics of spatial data distribution on the web. Some GIS tools that are used as web servers are also presented with respect to strategies and technological solutions. Further on, the main characteristic, advantages and weaknesses of the conceived approaches for GIS web servers are described. Finally an overview of the feasible trends regarding the application of mobile GIS systems is presented. Opisani so dosedanji razvoj, oblike in značilnosti posredovanja prostorskih podatkov na spletu. Predstavljeni so tudi primeri orodij za GIS-e, ki delujejo na medmrežju kot spletni strežniki. Podane so razvojne strategije tovrstnih orodij in obstoječe tehnološke rešitve. Povzete so glavne značilnosti, prednosti in slabosti posameznih pristopov k zasnovi spletnih strežnikov za GIS-e.
