The author describes the history of research at the Institute, which at the time of its founding was a typical patriotic institution but has later on evolved into a modern scientific institution. Parallel to altered circumstances new topics have emerged. First the independence of the Slovene state and later its becoming part of the European and Euroatlantic integrations have set a number of new tasks for the researchers. Only seemingly the dilemma appeared whether so much research energy needs to be focused on the fields long thoroughly studied, as these too are subject to major changes calling for their intense research. Above all, new conditions for minorities in neighbouring states represent a unique chance for their future and prosperity. The task of research workers is to identify and direct these opportunities"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"V prispevku avtor opisuje razvoj raziskovanja na Inštitutu za narodnostna vprašanja, ki je bil ob svojem nastanku tipična narodnoobrambna inštitucija, skozi zgodovino pa se je razvil v moderno znanstveno inštitucijo. Vzporedno s tem so se razvile tudi nove teme, ki se jih raziskovalci lotevajo v spremenjenih razmerah. Sprva samostojnost slovenske države, pozneje pa njena integracija v evropske in evroatlantske povezave, sta raziskovalcem postavila vrsto novih nalog. Samo navidezno se je pojavila dilema, ali je sedaj še treba posvečati toliko raziskovalnih energij za področja , ki naj bi bila že dolgo raziskana, saj so tudi ta področja podvržena silovitim spremembam, ki prav tako narekujejo njihovo intenzivno raziskovanje, predvsem pa nove razmere za manjšine v sosednjih državah pomenijo enkratno priložnost za njihov nadaljnji obstoj in razvoj.
