Long-term cyclic loading, especially impact loading of the cartilage can cause structural changes that influence balance of the catabolic-anabolic processes in chondral matrix. Deterioration of chondral matrix in excessive loading can become irreversible. On the other hand, loading and motion are beneficial for maintaining normal structure and composition of chondral matrix. Chondroprotectives such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and other nutritients, such as antioxidantes have beneficial effect on maintaining cartilage. It appears that long-distance running does not increase the risk of osteoarthritis in healthy individuals and may even have some protective effect against joint degeneration</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Zdrav hrustanec omogoča normalno funkcijo obremenjenih sklepov in s tem športno aktivnost. Dolgotrajne ciklične obremenitve, predvsem pa ostre, udarne obremenitve hrustanca lahko povzročijo strukturne spremembe, ki vplivajo na ravnotežje kataboličnih in anaboličnih procesov v hrustančnem matriksu do te mere, da lahko začne hrustanec nepovratno propadati. Po drugi strani pa sta obremenjevanje in gibanje predpogoj za ohranjanje normalne zgradbe in sestave hrustančnega matriksa. Na ravnotežje anaboličnih in katabolilčnih procesov pri hrustancu, poškodovanem zaradi preobremenitve, in pri OA ugodno vplivajo zmerne ciklične obremenitve, hondroprotektivne prehranske snovi, kot so: glukozamin, hondroitin sulfat, nekateri antioksidanti in omega-3 maščobne kisline.
