The separation of powers in current, postmodern state systems cannot exist without an independent, accountable, and publicly trusted judiciary. Although Slovenia has a specific system for electing judges in the parliament, the core of the system of checks and balances in practice is not between the judicial and legislative branches of government, but between the judicial and executive branches of government.
