The study explores the early stages of the autobiographical genre, taking as examples two works from different time and cultural frames, Augustine's Confessions and The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum. Because both works are crucial for the consequent development of autobiography, the study compares the genre, linguistic, textual and thematic characteristics of the two works, and pays special attention to the relationship of the author to himself, the recipient, and the world in general. On the basis of the similarities in the thinking of the two authors, conclusions are inferred regarding the birth of a new type of self-awareness and mode of expression, which signifies an important shift in the development of literature and human (cultural) consciousness in general"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Pričujoča razprava se loteva problema začetkov avtobiografskega žanra, in sicer na primerih dveh del iz različnih časovnih in kulturnih okolij, to sta Izpovedi Avrelija Avgustina in Žitje protopopa Avvakuma. Ker sta obe deli odločilni za nadaljnji razvoj avtobiografije, razprava primerja žanrske, jezikovne, besedilne in tematske lastnosti obeh del, pri čemer posebno pozornost namenja razmerju (avtorja) do sebe, naslovnika in sveta nasploh.
