We present the important role of student work in developing graduates' competencies and its influence on employability and employment. Student work is defined and located within the Slovenian labour market while the importance of prior work experience upon entering the labour market is shown. V izvirnem članku je predstavljen pomen študentskega dela pri razvoju kompetenc diplomantov in njegovem vplivu na zaposljivost in zaposlovanje. Študentsko delo umešča na slovenski trg dela, nato pa predstavi pomen delovnih izkušenj, pridobljenih v času izobraževanja, za izboljšanje zaposlenosti in zaposljivosti diplomantov.
