The project involves pilot sites from six countries in southern and south-eastern Europe, including forested areas, agroforestry systems, orchards, wet grasslands, pastures, areas undergoing natural succession and more intensive agricultural systems. This paper presents the Slovenian pilot site of the EARTHONE project in the Črnotiče area of the Podgorski Kras. The pilot site is situated in a sub-Mediterranean karst landscape, where pastures and meadows, areas becoming overgrown and forest stands of downy oak (Quercus pubescens) intermingle within a small area. This gradient allows us to monitor the transition from agricultural land use to areas becoming overgrown with trees and shrubs, and to compare soil properties, vegetation, microclimatic conditions and carbon cycling across different stages of succession. In the pilot site, we monitor vegetation diversity, carry out physico-chemical soil analyses, monitor soil moisture and soil temperatures, take microclimatic measurements, conduct phenological observations, and carry out measurements of soil respiration, carbon cycling and analyses of the soil microbiome. This paper describes the scientific background, research design and methodology of the research work"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Projekt EARTHONE (Environmental Analysis and Resilience for Transformative Human-Optimized Natural Environments) je evropski raziskovalni projekt, namenjen boljšemu razumevanju povezav med rabo tal, podnebnimi spremembami, stanjem tal, vegetacijo in tokovi toplogrednih plinov. V projektu sodelujejo pilotna območja iz 6 držav južne in jugovzhodne Evrope, ki vključujejo gozdne površine, kmetijsko-gozdarske sisteme, sadovnjake, mokrotne travnike, pašnike, površine v zaraščanju in intenzivnejše kmetijske sisteme. Prispevek predstavlja slovensko pilotno območje projekta EARTHONE na območju Črnotič na Podgorskem Krasu. Pilotno območje je umeščeno v submediteranski kraški prostor, kjer se na majhnem območju prepletajo pašniki in travniki, zaraščajoče se površine ter gozdni sestoji s puhastim hrastom (Quercus pubescens). Gradient omogoča spremljanje prehoda od kmetijske rabe tal k površinam v zaraščanju z drevjem in grmovjem ter primerjavo talnih lastnosti, vegetacije, mikroklimatskih pogojev in kroženja ogljika za različne sukcesije. Na pilotnem območju spremljamo pestrost vegetacije, izvajamo fizikalno-kemijske analize tal, spremljamo talno vlago in temperature tal, mikroklimatske meritve, izvajamo fenološka opazovanja, izvajamo meritve respiracije tal, kroženja ogljika in analize talnega mikrobioma.
