Research has shown correlation of certain personality traits of the owner and their psychological state with behavioural problems of their pet dog. For these reasons, it is important that disabled persons who are candidates for acquiring an assistance dog are assessed for their personality structure, emotional state and cognitive abilities. The role of occupational therapist in the process of acquiring the assistance dog is assessment of activities where the dog can collaborate with its owner, assessing individuals' skills and the general benefit of including the assistance dog in their everyday activities. Our review focuses on past research on the subject of importance of psychological and occupational assessment which affects the decision process of acquiring assistance dog</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Pes pomočnik je ena od možnosti, ki invalidni osebi vrača samostojnost v širšem pomenu. Pretekle raziskave so pokazale povezanost med določenimi vidiki osebnosti lastnika in njegovim psihološkim stanjem ter vedenjskimi težavami njihovih psov. S tega vidika je potrebno pri invalidih, ki kandidirajo za pridobitev psa pomočnika, s pomočjo psiholoških preizkušenj preveriti osebnostno strukturo, čustvovanje in kognitivne sposobnosti. Vloga delovnega terapevta v procesu pridobivanja psa pomočnika je analiza aktivnosti, kjer lahko sodeluje pes pomočnik, ovrednotenje posameznikove spretnosti in potrebe ter vključitev psa pomočnika v vsakodnevne aktivnosti.
