The presence, progress and distinction between AKD and CKD can be determined by monitoring serum creatinine and BUN values. Prerenal kidney failure is the most common form of AKD. AKD can be irreversible or, alternatively, can lead to a slow recovery of kidney function. Symptoms and signs of CKD often developslowly and depend on the percentage of functional nephrons. Individualscan remain asymptomatic until AKD is far advanced. Uremia develops during the final stage nf CICD. Serumska koncentracija kreatinina in sečnine sta pomembna kazalca popuščanja ledvic. Časovni potek koncentracije serumskega nebeljakovinskega dušika pa je v pomoč pri ločevanju med APL in KPL. Najpogostejša oblika APL jepredledvična. APL se lahko konča z nepovratno odpovedjo ledvic ali pa s postopno obnovo ledvičnega delovanja. Znaki in simptomi KPL so odvisni od razmerja med propadlimi in neprizadetimi nefroni. Glede na delež neprizadetih nefronov delimo KPL v tri obdobja: zmanjšana delovna rezerva ledvic, kronično popuščanje ledvic in odpoved ledvic z razvojem uremičnega sindroma.
