Substantial areas of affected forest or a large number of damaged trees require a special approach to the identification of their location, damage type, damaged area or intensity and sort of damage manifestation, as well as definition of the available infrastructure and terrain characteristics. Acquisition of the required information can be performed by the use of detection or data gathering techniques. As a rule, on-land approach or field inspection is the first step; if needed, it is later supplemented by the methods of remote sensing (plane and helicopter as well as satellite imagery). This article presents review of techniques for detection of large-scale damages and selected examples of their use for certain types of damages in forest protection. We prepared a suggestion for a scheme which, together with the review of publications according to the types of damages, enables the user to choose the most appropriate technique with regard to the characteristics of individual detection techniques and type of damage in forests"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Velike poškodbe v gozdovih so poseben dogodek, ki pomembno spremenijo razmere v gozdnem ekosistemu. Za znatne površine prizadetega gozda oz. veliko poškodovanih dreves je potreben poseben pristop določanja njihove lokacije, vrste poškodbe, poškodovane površine oz. intenzivnosti in vrste pojavljanja poškodbe ter opredeljevanja razpoložljive infrastrukture in lastnosti terena. S tehnikami zaznavanja oz. zbiranja podatkov je mogoče dobiti potrebne informacije. Terestrični pristop oz. terenski ogled je praviloma prvi korak, ki ga pozneje po potrebi dopolnimo z metodami daljinskega zaznavanja (letalska in helikopterska ter satelitska snemanja). V prispevku je pregled tehnik zaznavanja velikih poškodb ter izbranih primerov njihove uporabe za določene vrste poškodb pri varstvu gozdov.
