S širitvijo dejavnosti na šest dni v tednu, ki je bila izvedena leta 2003/2004, je bila prebivalcem Ljubljane s sladkorno boleznijo zagotovljena večja dostopnost specialista diabetologa in zdravstvene vzgoje, kontinuirano vodenje sladkorne bolezni pri posamezniku in kakovostno življenje z njo. Namen ustanoviteljev je bil povezati primarni in sekundarni nivo zdravstvenega varstva na področju vodenja sladkornega bolnika s pravilno organizacijo dela. Zaradi skrbnega vodenja registra sladkornih bolnikov se je rutinsko administrativno delo zmanjšalo, register sladkornih bolnikov pa je članom tima zagotovil možnost nadzora nad kakovostjo dela in možnost strokovnih analiz.
