For 10-40 % of the people it can be a challenge to swallow solid oral medications, even to those with healthy swallowing function. Methods We searched the literature for methods and tools to reduce swallowing problems. We examined the 30 most frequently prescribed drugs in the solid oral form used at the University Rehabilitation Institute in Ljubljana. Results A number of strategies can potentially make it easier to swallow whole pills. These include teaching pill-swallowing techniques, using pill-swallowing aids, using alternative formulations or routes of administration, or the pills may be modified and mixed in foods and drinks to aid swallowing. Conclusions An integrated and interdisciplinary approach is needed to reduce inappropriate dosage-form modifications, and improve medication administration to people with swallowing problems. Altering a solid-dose formulation should be reserved as a last resort</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Izhodišča Trdna peroralna farmacevtska oblika doziranja zdravil, kot so tablete in kapsule, je najcenejša, najpogostejša in najprimernejša. Spreminjanje trdne peroralne farmacevtske oblike je treba obravnavati kot zadnjo od možnosti</dc:description><edm:type>TEXT</edm:type><dc:type xml:lang="sl">znanstveno časopisje</dc:type><dc:type xml:lang="en">journals</dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785" /></edm:ProvidedCHO><ore:Aggregation rdf:about="http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-LCXU7XCF"><edm:aggregatedCHO rdf:resource="URN:NBN:SI:doc-LCXU7XCF" /><edm:isShownBy rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-LCXU7XCF/e04bf6d5-c634-4cb0-a8cb-870b88f4ae36/PDF" /><edm:rights rdf:resource="http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/" /><edm:provider>Slovenian National E-content Aggregator</edm:provider><edm:intermediateProvider xml:lang="en">National and University Library of Slovenia</edm:intermediateProvider><edm:dataProvider xml:lang="sl">Univerzitetni rehabilitacijski inštitut RS – Soča</edm:dataProvider><edm:object rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-LCXU7XCF/maxi/edm" /><edm:isShownAt rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-LCXU7XCF" /></ore:Aggregation></rdf:RDF>
