They can be referred to as examples of the "metatheatre", as they often contain allusions to the theatre as such, that is to say, actors, stage conventions etc. For the understanding of Aristophanic comedy, it is important to realise that certain stage conventions of Aristophanes' time differ from the conventions which are in use on the modern stage; one of the most important appears to be the convention by which all parts of a comedy were played by no more than three or four actorsAristofan je svoje komedije ustvarjal z mislijo na konkretno gledališko uprizoritev. Obenem lahko o njegovih delih govorimo kot o primerih "metateatra", saj v njih pogosto zasledimo namige na gledališče kot tako, torej na igralce, gledališke konvencije idr.
