The largest groups of phytoantioxidants are polyphenols and terpenes. Polyphenols are generally divided into flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and stilbenoids. They are found in all plants as secondary metabolites. After application to the skin, they act as reducing agents, i.e. hydrogen and electron donors and metal ion chelators to stop radical reactions and prevent further skin damage. Terpenes are also widely distributed in plants, and the antioxidant action is attributed to the prevention of lipid oxidations by donating a hydrogen atom. Among terpenes, carotenoids are the most important subgroup used in cosmetics. The review article describes in detail the mechanism of action of polyphenols and terpenes as cosmetically active ingredients"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Oksidativni stres povzroča poškodbe lipidov, proteinov in nukleinskih kislin in je s tem pomembno vključen v procese prezgodnjega staranja kože, vnetja in tudi v rakave spremembe kože. številni pristopi za zmanjšanje poškodb, ki nastanejo kot posledica oksidativnega stresa, vključujejo tudi dermalno uporabo naravnih antioksidantov. Najštevilčnejši skupini fitoantioksidantov so polifenoli in terpeni. Polifenole v grobem delimo na flavonoide, fenolne kisline, lignane in stilbenoide. Najdemo jih v vseh rastlinah v vlogi sekundarnih metabolitov. Po nanosu na kožo delujejo kot reducenti, tj. donorji vodika ali elektronov ter kot kelatorji kovinskih ionov, s čimer ustavijo radikalske reakcije in tako preprečijo nadaljnje poškodbe kože. Terpeni so prav tako široko porazdeljeni v rastlinah, antioksidativno delovanje pa pripisujemo preprečevanju lipidne oksidacije z doniranjem vodikovega atoma. Najpomembnejša terpenska podskupina antioksidantov v kozmetičnih izdelkih so karotenoidi.
