The most frequent intoxications are those by drugs for the ner- vous system (80 %). Anxiolytics, hypnotics, and seda- tives, particularly benzodiazepines, represent 45 % of all medications ingested in suicidal purposes. They are followed by intoxications with antipsychotics, antide- pressants, and drugs for the musculoskeletal system, primarily analgesics. The most frequently observed cli- nical feature of severe drug intoxications is a reduced level of consciousness. Treatment is primarily sympto- matic, although some drug intoxications can be trea- ted with specific antidotes. In order to treat drug intoxications successfully, we need to know their toxi- cokinetic and toxicodynamic features.
