This subject is reflected in Spanish literature of the time, especially in the realistic and naturalistic novel. Specifically, the topic of deviant social or sexual behaviour is an essential part of the novels of Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), especially those concerning "con-temporary Spanish life" which reveal the controversy surrounding the suggested mechanisms of control and modes of correction of socially undesirable and unacceptable elements. In this analysis I focus on three of Pérez Galdós's novels, La desheredada (1881), Fortunata and Jacinta (1886-1887) and Nazarín (1895), in which prostitution appears not only in various forms and degrees, but also pre-sented from the perspective of different philosophies and ideological points of view. The subject of prostitution and of the women involved in it helped Galdós in developing and disseminating his criticism directed at the Spanish society of his time. Using as a starting point the theoretical postulates of Michel Foucault (on institutionalized surveillance, the correction of abnormal female behaviour, the marginalization of people deemed dangerous to social order etc.), as presented in his studies Discipline and Punish (1975) and The History of sexuality, 1. The will to knowledge (1976), the following thematic segments of literary discourse are analysed in this article: body discipline, the social and sexual oppres-sion of Spanish women, male panoptic surveillance, and the image of women according to the postulates of bourgeois society in the 19th century</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">V celotni Evropi je 19. stoletje ključno obdobje za položaj ženske, saj so se tak-rat povsod pričela pojavljati različna gibanja za žensko emancipacijo, pa tudi politični in družbeni razmisleki na temo ženske in njene podrejene vloge v meščanski družbi. Volja do znanja (1976), v pričujočem članku analiziramo naslednje teme: telesna disciplina, družbeno in seksualno zatiranje ženske v španski družbi, panoptikon moškega nadzorovanja in podoba ženske v skladu s postulati meščanske družbe v 19. stoletju</dc:description><edm:type>TEXT</edm:type><dc:type xml:lang="sl">znanstveno časopisje</dc:type><dc:type xml:lang="en">journals</dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785" /></edm:ProvidedCHO><ore:Aggregation rdf:about="http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-JM5PI34U"><edm:aggregatedCHO rdf:resource="URN:NBN:SI:doc-JM5PI34U" /><edm:isShownBy rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-JM5PI34U/8d9e6420-e35f-4f88-b69e-6e9e125ca2ad/PDF" /><edm:rights rdf:resource="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/" /><edm:provider>Slovenian National E-content Aggregator</edm:provider><edm:intermediateProvider xml:lang="en">National and University Library of Slovenia</edm:intermediateProvider><edm:dataProvider xml:lang="sl">Univerza v Ljubljani, Filozofska fakulteta</edm:dataProvider><edm:object rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-JM5PI34U/maxi/edm" /><edm:isShownAt rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-JM5PI34U" /></ore:Aggregation></rdf:RDF>
