The specimens were captured but they were still unable to disengage because of the large terminal dorsal appendages of the Perlinodes aureus (Smith) male. This type of unnatural mating behavior may be the result of misidentification based on the similar size of the Pteronarcys californica Newport male with that of a Perlinodes female.
