The area of the brackish lagoon in the immediate vicinity of Koper had been greatly degraded in the past, mainly in compliance with the original plan to acquire new land surfaces for the local industrial zone. Later on, however, when it became obvious that the place holds some exceptional natural riches, it was proclaimed a nature reserve.
