In contrast to its environmentally conscious predecessors in contemporary British drama, in which the subject of climate change is predominantly treated from a bottom-up perspective, the play Kyoto dramatises the ten-year negotiation process of the so-called Kyoto Protocol of 1997, which took place at the highest global decision-making level: the United Nations Climate Change Conferences. Although Murphy and Robertson’s exposure of the conflicting interests of global players in environmental politics could be attributed to the entire recent “turn” in British political drama that “lays emphasis on argumentation and reflection rather than quick action” (Redling), immediate critical responses to Kyoto propelled the play into a genuine “thriller”. The interest of this paper is to examine the play’s “strategies of representation” – particularly its attitude to language – and to discuss the links it establishes between drama, debate and public opinion. These links are, namely, characteristic of a perennial dramaturgical matrix that has found in Kyoto one of its most darkly humorous specimens, attuned to the “deliberative ecology” that is both the singular promise for saving the planet and the crucial obstacle to doing so"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"V prispevku se osredotočam na dramo Kyoto Joeja Murphyja in Joeja Robertsona. Premierno je bila uprizorjena leta 2024 v gledališču Swan Theatre, in sicer v sodelovanju produkcijske hiše Good Chance in Kraljeve Shakespearove družbe, leta 2025 pa se je preselila v londonski West End. Za razliko od večine predhodnih okoljsko angažiranih del sodobne britanske dramatike, v katerih je tematika podnebnih sprememb prikazana s perspektive »od spodaj navzgor«, je Kyoto dramatizacija desetletnega pogajalskega procesa o t. i. Kjotskem protokolu iz leta 1997, ki je potekal na najvišji ravni globalnega odločanja: na konferencah Združenih narodov o podnebnih spremembah. Čeprav bi Murphyjevo in Robertsonovo razkrivanje navzkrižnih interesov globalnih akterjev v okoljski politiki lahko pripisali nedavnemu korenitemu »obratu« v britanski politični drami, ki »poudarja argumentacijo in razmislek namesto hitrih ukrepov« (Redling), je bila Kyoto v kritikah takoj razglašena za pravi »triler«. Cilj članka je proučiti njene »strategije reprezentacije« – zlasti odnos do jezika – in razpravljati o povezavah med dramo, razpravo in javnim mnenjem, ki se vzpostavljajo v njej. Te povezave so namreč značilne za večno dramaturško matriko, ki se je v Kyotu utelesila kot primer skrajno mračnega humorja, pod taktirko »posvetovalne ekologije« – edine obljube za rešitev planeta in hkrati tudi ključne ovire na tej poti"}],"edm:type":"TEXT","dc:type":[{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"znanstveno časopisje"},{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"journals"},{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785"}]},"ore:Aggregation":{"@rdf:about":"http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-IWS2UE99","edm:aggregatedCHO":{"@rdf:resource":"URN:NBN:SI:doc-IWS2UE99"},"edm:isShownBy":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-IWS2UE99/5dc36fc6-7477-4803-9b40-bd5d042a9a0c/PDF"},"edm:rights":{"@rdf:resource":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},"edm:provider":"Slovenian National E-content Aggregator","edm:intermediateProvider":{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"National and University Library of Slovenia"},"edm:dataProvider":{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Slovenski gledališki inštitut (SLOGI)"},"edm:object":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-IWS2UE99/maxi/edm"},"edm:isShownAt":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-IWS2UE99"}}}}
