Written exclusively on the basis of primary archival sources, this paper speaks of the suffering of the local population brought about by this natural disaster, of the difcult restoration of the affected area, of collection of resources for the affected population, and the response of local, provincial and state authorities, including the Habsburg dynasty, to the situation. It especially touches on the role and importance of military authorities (e.g. the Fifth Army, or the replacement battalion of the 87th infantry regiment), which were, in wartimes, the only authorities in charge of helping the affected population. Additionally, this paper highlights the feld work of one of the most important seismologist in the monarchy at the time, Prof. Dr. Aleksander Tornquist, and the problem of restoration of the completely collapsed Franciscan monastery in BrežiceOb koncu prve svetovne vojne je sredi zime, 29. januarja 1917, Brežice z okolico prizadejal hud potres, eden najhujših v sodobni slovenski zgodovini. Članek, ki je napisan izključno na osnovi primarnih arhivskih virov, govori o trpljenju lokalnega prebivalstva ob tej naravni nesreči, o težavnem poteku sanacije prizadetega področja, zbiranju sredstev za prizadeto prebivalstvo in o odnosu lokalnih, deželnih in državnih oblasti, vključno s habsburško dinastijo, do reševanja nastalega položaja. Posebej se osredotoča na vlogo in pomen vojaških oblasti (npr. 5. armade ali nadomestnega bataljona 87. pehotnega polka), ki so bile v vojnem času pravzaprav edine pristojne za pomoč prizadetemu prebivalstvu. Hkrati je v članku osvetljeno tudi terensko delo takrat najpomembnejšega seizmologa v monarhiji prof. dr.
