These are conducted to the perception centres in the CNS, where they elicit sensory impressions. Receptors of the somatosensory apparatus make sensory processing of tactile sensation, proprioception, pain and thermal sensation possible. The character of sensation is determined by the following four stimulus characteristics: modality, intensity, duration and location. The links between physical characteristics of the stimulus and characteristic features of sensory impressions are studied by psychophysical methodsČlovek je občutljiv za vrsto različnih energij. Njihov vpliv zaznamo, če imamo zanje ustrezne receptorje, ki fizikalni dražljaj spremene v zaporedje živčnih impulzov. Ti po določenih živčnih poteh potujejo do središč v osrednjem živčevju, kjer izzovejo zaznavo (občutek). Receptorji somatosenzoričnega sistema omogočajo senzorično procesiranje dotika, propriocepcije, bolečine ter toplote in hladu. Pomembne so štiri značilnosti dražljaja, ki opredeljujejo značilnost zaznave: modalnost, intenzivnost, trajanje in lokalizacija.
