We analyse this through a critical review of the relevant literature along with an analysis of the European Values Study 1999/2000 and the European Social Survey 2002. On the individual level, it seems that attendance at church services and belonging to religion-based voluntary organisations are the most decisive indicators of a religious impact on social capital indicators. On the other hand, our investigation shows that some differences in social capital can be linked to differences in the religious-cultural traditions of European regions. Although religion generally has a positive or neutral impact on social capital, we also discuss the limits and weak points of religious associational life"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Članek se osredotoča na organizirane oblike religije kot posebne vire družbene povezanosti, civilne kulture in socialnega kapitala. V analizi je upoštevana kritična obravnava relevantne literature ter obdelava podatkov iz Evropske raziskave vrednot 1999/2000 in Evropske družboslovne raziskave 2002. Analiza kaže, da je na individualni ravni vpliv religije na socialni kapital večji pri rednih obiskovalcih nedeljskih obredov in največji pri članih z religijo povezanih prostovoljnih združenj. Po drugi strani smo pokazali, da nekatere razlike v ravni socialnega kapitala v evropskih regijah lahko povežemo z razlikami v religiozno-kulturnih tradicijah.
