This paper provides an update on the approaches to periodontal disease treatment, for reduction of periodontal plaques and periodontopathogenic microorganisms, modulation of immunomodulatory response, and regeneration of periodontal tissues. Advanced delivery systems in the fight against periodontal disease are gaining in importance, and include nanosized carriers for small drug molecules, biopharmaceutics, probiotics, or stem cells. Furthermore, nanodelivery systems with their specific features are designed to improve the bioavailability of the therapeutics over that achieved by conventional dosage forms. Indeed, the nanomedicines can enable targeted drug delivery to periodontal pockets, to specific cells and cellular organelles, or to microorganisms in biofilms. Additionally, the nanocarriers can control the release of the incorporated therapeutic(s). The most studied advanced drug delivery systems for treatment of periodontal disease are liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and nanofibers, which are reviewed here. Special focus is on nanofibers, in which can be incorporated drug molecules and probiotics, as well as represent a scaffold for regenerative cells to achieve better regeneration of periodontal tissues in the future"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Parodontalna bolezen povzroči zmanjšano adhezijo obzobnih tkiv na zobno korenino in postopno razgradnjo pozobnice, cementa in čeljustne kosti. Ob tem prihaja do bolečine, nelagodja ob žvečenju in izgube zob. V prispevku so predstavljeni danes znani pristopi zdravljenja, kot so odstranjevanje zobnih oblog in parodontopatogenih mikroorganizmov, modulacija imunskega odziva in regeneracija obzobnih tkiv. Pri tem imajo vse večji pomen napredni dostavni sistemi, ki vključujejo nanonosilce, za vnos nizkomolekularnih učinkovin, biofarmacevtikov, probiotikov in matičnih celic. Nanodostavni sistemi v primerjavi s tradicionalnimi farmacevtskimi oblikami izboljšajo terapevtski učinek dostavljenih učinkovin, kar je posledica njihovih edinstvenih lastnosti. Nanozdravila omogočajo ciljano dostavo učinkovin v obzobne žepe, do določenih celic in celičnih organelov ali mikroorganizmov v biofilmu; dodatno pa lahko tudi nadzorujejo sproščanje vgrajenih terapevtikov. Predstavljeni so najpogosteje proučevani napredni dostavni sistemi, kot so liposomi, polimerni nanodelci in nanovlakna za preventivo in zdravljenje parodontalne bolezni.
