The study was undertaken more than a decade after various measures had been taken to reduce environmental lead exposure in the population of the Mežica valley. Methods: The study involved 47 children who reached the age of three years and attended for a preventive medical examination between December 2001 and June 2002. Blood samples were taken by a finger prick. Results: More than onethird of the children studied had blood lead concentrations above 100 g/l. Children living in the upper Mežica valley had significantly higher blood lead levels (median and average) as compared to children from the lower part of the valley (p<0.001). Conclusion: The results obtained call for an immediate intervention at the individual level . At the same time, they form a basis for further research and monitoring of lead burden in the Mežica valley inhabitants. Also, the results of the study are useful for assessingthe effectiveness of the risk-reducing measures taken in the exposedpopulation"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Uvod: Namen raziskave je bil ugotoviti, kakšna je koncentracija svinca v krvi otrok, ki živijo v Mežiški dolini potem, ko so bili pred več kot desetimi letiuvedeni različni ukrepi za zmanjšanje izpostavljenosti prebivalcev svincu iz okolja. Metoda dela: V raziskavi so sodelovali otroci, ki so ob dopolnjeni starosti treh let od decembra 2001 do junija 2002 prišli na preventivni zdravstveni pregled. Starši so bili z namenom raziskave seznanjeni in so soglašali z vključitvijo njihovih otrok. Vzorec krvi, v katerem je bil določensvinec, je bil odvzet iz prsta. Rezultati: Sodelovalo je 47 otrok iz območja Mežiške doline. Več kot tretjina je imela koncentracijo svinca v krvi nad 100 g/l. Rezultati kažejo na statistično značilno večjo koncentracijo (mediana in aritmetična sredina) svinca v krvi med otroki iz Zgornje Mežiške doline v primerjavi s tistimi iz Spodnje Mežiške doline (p<0.001). Zaključek: Rezultati zahtevajo takojšnje ukrepanje na individualni ravni, hkrati pa so koristni za nadaljnje raziskovanje in spremljanje stanja onesnaženosti in obremenjenosti prebivalcev Mežiške doline s svincem.
