Based on certain mechanisms of action of nitrates, consumption of concentrated beetroot juice is expected to improve muscle strength and power in addition to endurance. In our review of the literature, we did not find a positive effect in the area of maximum strength. A positive effect was demonstrated in maximum strength recovery after fatigue protocols. Research also found a similar effect in countermovement jump height, which recovered faster after fatigue when nitrates were consumed. A positive effect is also seen in Wingate test and resistance training parameters, where beetroot juice increased muscle force generated, contraction velocity, and number of repetitions to failure. Our review of the literature indicates that the addition of nitrates is also useful in sports involving short explosive movements, both acutely and in the medium term, at least during a certain period of the training process. Our review also suggests that the effects of beetroot juice may differ by gender, but this needs to be investigated further in the future. There is also a lack of research in the area of explosive strength and strength endurance. In the future, it will also be useful to study in more detail the effect of nitrates that can be ingested through the daily diet</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Namen članka je povzeti znanstveno literaturo na temo vpliva koncentriranega soka rdeče pese na mišično jakost, moč in hitrost. Zaradi določenih mehanizmov delovanja nitratov se v teoriji zdi smiselno domnevati, da zaužitje koncentriranega soka rdeče pese poleg vzdržljivosti izboljša tudi mišično jakost in moč. Naš pregled literature ni zaznal pozitivnega vpliva na največjo jakost. Pozitiven vpliv se je pokazal pri povrnitvi največje jakosti po protokolih utrujanja. O podobnih ugotovitvah so raziskave poročale tudi pri skoku z nasprotnim gibanjem, pri katerem se je višina po utrujanju hitreje povrnila ob zaužitju koncentriranega soka rdeče pese. Pozitiven vpliv so nakazali tudi pri parametrih testa Wingate ter izvajanja vadbe proti uporu, pri čemer so nitrati povečali proizvedeno mišično moč, hitrosti kontrakcije in število ponovitev do odpovedi. Naš pregled literature tako nakazuje smiselnost dodajanja nitratov tudi v športih, ki vključujejo kratka eksplozivna gibanja, tako akutno kot tudi srednjeročno vsaj v določenem obdobju trenažnega procesa. Nekaj raziskav kaže na različen vpliv nitratov glede na spol, vendar bo to v prihodnje treba podrobneje raziskati. Raziskav primanjkuje tudi na področju eksplozivne jakosti in vzdržljivosti v jakosti.
