The process of excluding them from society by putting them in special institutions began some 200 yeras ago.The formation of the special role of the invalid which was supposed to help people with special needs actually disabled them to lead an independent life and thus kept them even further away from the possibility to join the mainstream. The process of reintegrating people with special needs into society began in the second half of the 20th century. Most of these attemps have not had any significant success; they have been hindered by the social role of the disabled and its by-product, their disabled identity. To bring about real changes, a deeper social change is needed along with a change in the relationships between three key factors - sociaty, helpers, and people with special needs. The model of a three-way process of change proposed in the article shows how the three actors and their relationship should change in order to create the conditions for an independent life of people with special needs"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Ljudje s posebnimi potrebami oz. t. i. invalidi so bili v vseh družbah na statusni družbeni lestvici potisnjeni na dno. Pred približno 200 leti se je začel še proces njihovega izločanja iz družbe v posebne institucije.Oblikovanje posebne družbene vloge invalida, ki naj bi pomagala ljudem s posebnimi potrebami, je te osebe dejansko naredila nezmožne za neodvisno življenje, s tem pa jih je še bolj oddaljila od možnosti vključevanja v osrednje družbene tokove, V drugi polovici dvajsetega stoletja so se začeli procesi ponovnega vključevanja ljudi s posebnimi potrebami v družbo. Ti poskusi večinoma niso preveč uspešni, ker družbena vloga invalida in njen nujni produkt, identiteta invalida, to onemogočata. Da bi prišlo do sprememb, se mora družba transformirati in vzpostaviti drugačne odnose med ključnimi akterji - družbo, pomagajočim, osebo s posebnimi potrebami.
