This question is addressed from a historical perspective through analysis of visual news reporting in three Yugoslav daily newspapers in 1988, which were part of the information system that aimed to balance the oneway fl ow of information. This analysis of visual coverage of international news - which shows that the representation of developing countries depends more on editorial independence than on structural inequality of the raw news - also fills a gap in existing research on international news within the context of NWICO debate which tends to neglect the visual modality of news reporting. It also off ers a starting point for critical appraisal of the normative demands put forward by the report within the context of contemporary global communication"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Prispevek obravnava aktualnost normativnih zahtev, ki jih za razumevanje vloge družbenega komuniciranja postavlja MacBridovo poročilo. Prispevek izhaja iz ene od ključnih kritik poročila - kritike strukturne dominacije trga novic, ki da rezultira v enosmernem toku novic in posledični informacijski odvisnosti držav v razvoju ter njihovi negativni medijski reprezentaciji. Tega vprašanja se prispevek loteva iz zgodovinske perspektive skozi analizo vizualnega poročanja mednarodnih novic v treh jugoslovanskih časnikih - Delu, Vjesniku in Politiki -, ki so bili vpeti v medijski sistem, ki je poskušal ta enosmerni tok informacij uravnotežiti. Analiza je izhodišče za razpravo o povezanosti ekonomske in komunikacijske družbene ureditve ter o aktualnosti zahtev po spremembi ene skozi reformo druge. Hkrati poudarek na analizi konstrukcije \"podob\" drugega v mednarodnih novicah iz leta 1988 zapolnjuje vrzel v literaturi o mednarodnih novicah znotraj razprav o NWICO, ki so vizualno modalnost novic praviloma zapostavljale.
