Its purpose is to stimulate large muscle groups of the paralysed lower limbs to create a cyclic movement of the legs. In FES-cycling the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteus maximus are stimulated with surface electrodes through a computer. Many studies report on the physiological adjustments after cycling with FES in individuals after spinal cord injury, stroke and cerebral palsy. Many studies have reported beneficial effects of FES cycling, such as increasing muscle mass, better blood flow, reduction of pressure ulcers, improved self-image and reduction of bone mineral density loss</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Kolesarjenje s funkcionalno električno stimulacijo (FES) se uporablja v rehabilitaciji več kot 30 let. Veliko avtorjev v literaturi poroča o fizioloških prilagoditvah pri osebah po poškodbi hrbtenjače, možganski kapi in cerebralni paralizi po kolesarjenju s FES. Želeli smo pregledati članke s tega področja in povzeti principe kolesarjenja s FES ter njegove pozitivne učinke na metabolizem pri bolnikih s poškodbo hrbtenjače. Namen FES je stimulacija velikih mišičnih skupin paraliziranih spodnjih udov in vzpostavitev cikličnega gibanja nog. Pri FES-kolesarjenju preko računalnika s površinskimi elektrodami stimuliramo mišice quadriceps, fleksorje kolen in gluteus maximus.
