To velja tudi na področju farmacevtske kemije ali ožje definirano, na področju načrtovanja, sinteze in vrednotenja novih učinkovin. Protimikrobne učinkovine odražajo nenehno željo človeštva, da bi se uspešno spopadlo z boleznimi, ki so v preteklosti predstavljale glavni razlog za veliko smrtnost in kratko življenjsko dobo. Ob iztekanju zelo uspešnega obdobja obvladovanja bakterijskih okužb je zelo pomembno iskanje novih molekul za prihodnost.
