Compared with the global state-of-the-art, the art historical methodology in Slovenia is rather underdeveloped, especially as practised in the central institutions of art historical research. Despite the influential pioneer work contributed by Izidor Cankar, the notion that art history is a historical science independent of theory prevailed well into the second half of the 20th century. It is only since the 1970s that contemporary art historical methods have begun to register in the practice of individual art historians"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"V besedilu skušam predstaviti pregled metod umetnostne zgodovine v Sloveniji, še posebej tistih, ki se nanašajo na raziskovanje modernizma in sodobne umetnosti. V primerjavi s splošno umetnostnozgodovinsko metodologijo je umetnostnozgodovinska metodologija v Sloveniji slabo razvita, predvsem na področju temeljnih institucij, ki se ukvarjajo z umetnostnozgodovinskimi raziskavami. Kljub temu da je Izidor Cankar vzpostavil vplivne nastavke za razvoj umetnostnozgodovinske metodologije, je mnenje, da je umetnostna zgodovina zgodovinska znanost, ki ni povezana s teorijo, obveljalo vse do druge polovice 20. stoletja.
